- Though she has been known on occasion to pick up stringed instruments, Mercedes was drawn to the drums in her early teens. A shortage of drummers led to her playing in many garage bands during high school.
- Mercedes took private drum lessons on and off through her teens, and supplemented her musical education with Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, and Sonic Youth covers in yet another garage band. Later on, she branched out to Jazz, minimalist music, and electronic music. She makes up for her lack of Music Theory with a keen ear.
